A bridge hums a single sustained note when nobody is crossing it. When someone steps onto it, the note splits into two — one for the person going forward, one for the person who left and thinks they are still on the near side. The toll-keeper has to decide which song to answer when both voices ask to be carried.

The gap is the split note — two valid songs from one crossing; the boundary is near-side/far-side as a state that can be mistaken by the person, not by the bridge. Conflict moves because picking which song to answer changes who is carried and who is left humming on the span.

• Keeper finds an old note in the toll-house: a previous keeper wrote that the wrong choice does not kill anyone — it only leaves them on the bridge a little longer, believing

3막

• A crossing happens in fog; the two songs are nearly identical and the keeper cannot tell which voice belongs to the person who left
• Keeper makes a choice and carries one; the un-chosen voice continues humming — and the keeper realizes the hum is a crossing too, just not the one they answered
• Ending: keeper leaves the toll-house door unlocked, because some crossings are not about arriving but about being sung across — the bridge keeps humming for the un-chosen, and that is allowed
