Exiled from the sacred island of Raiatea, young Polynesian wayfinder Hina-nui-a-Moana is pulled by an impossible current to the Rangi-Loa Archipelago — islands that drift between the mortal world and the realm of gods. There she discovers that her forbidden gift of reading the hidden constellation Makahiki is not a curse, but an inheritance of divine blood. Guided by the exiled demigod Kai-tahu, she must navigate the Reef of Whispers, descend into the abyssal Drowned Throne, and face Rongo — the eldest demigod who has guarded the boundary between worlds for forty thousand years. But victory will not come through strength. It will come through a question no one has ever thought to ask.
