In the 24th century, near-light courier Vesper Nahara has spent a decade of her own life — and sixty years of everyone else's — carrying letters between the worlds of the Ansari Corridor. On the day the ansible corporation RelayCorp buys out her guild's last terminal, she receives the first letter ever addressed to her: her mother died three years ago on Halcyon. And in the terminal's archive, forty unclaimed letters — one for every year of Vesper's absence, prepaid and waiting — are protected by a single law: pending claims cannot be purged. To claim them before the purge runs, the last courier must cross the Long Silence, the shortcut that exists only in her dead father's star-maps, and finally answer the question of where a courier belongs.
